I was an alpaca breeder. I owned both Huacaya & Suri. I am also a long-time hand spinner and fleece & spinning judge. Merino wool can often be just as fine as alpaca. The staple length is shorter, but it usually has much better crimp ergo, much better memory for fitted, knitted garments. Suri has no memory but a good shine. It takes dye well; similar to silk in that regard, but with a longer staple length. That said, much of the alpaca from the Peruvian industry is itchy, has no memory and unsuited to a fitted garment. Some of what they label alpaca there is actually llama. This is legal there.
