I think that's a difficult question to answer. The true mean is probably something like 4-5 years, given the propensity of Great Danes to develop osteosarcoma or die of gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV). There are no new studies, as far as I know, so most guesses are based on some form of selectively remembered personal experience. The 8-year lifespan is generally a number given for a Dane that was healthy, never had GDV, and died of a disease of old age.
